Morticia Addams – The inspiration for horror movie hostess

Morticia A. Addams (née Frump) is the fictional matriarch of “The Addams Family“, created by cartoonist Charles Addams and based on his first wife Barbara (who became the second wife of John Hersey, a colleague at The New Yorker and the author of Hiroshima).

Vampira – the first horror movie hostess

We decided to start Halloween earlier and bring back to life the amazing horror art of 80s and 90s.

Here is the queen of scream: VAMPIRA!

The idea for the Vampira character was born in 1953 when Maila Nurmi attended choreographer Lester Horton’s annual Bal Caribe Masquerade in a costume inspired by Morticia Addams in The New Yorker cartoons of Charles Addams. Her appearance with pale white skin and tight black dress caught the attention of television producer Hunt Stromberg, Jr. (1923–86), who wanted to hire her to host horror movies on the Los Angeles television station KABC-TV, but Stromberg had no idea how to contact her. He finally got her phone number from Rudi Gernreich, later famed as the designer of the topless swimsuit. The name Vampira was the invention of Nurmi’s husband, Dean Riesner. Nurmi’s characterization was influenced by the Dragon Lady from the comic strip Terry and the Pirates and the evil queen from Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Do you still remember Elvira The Mistress of The Dark?

With all the movies we see on TV, Internet and also in stores (DVDs) we shouldn’t aspect young people to ever heard about The Mistress Of The Dark,  ELVIRA. Teenagers are captivated by movies like Hannah Montana,  and if we look now at Miley Cyrus she is not the best role model for kids and teenagers,  they all forget about art and real great movies that pass the biggest test: THE TIME!

Who or what is Elvira?

Elvira is a female given name. It is of Spanish origin, originally believed to mean “the white”. Other theories are that it is of Germanic or West Gothic origin and that the name means “alert” or “trustworthy”.

Elvira is a horror character created by Cassandra Peterson for a local horror show.
